Anniversary

Hal över Celebrates 100 Years

A century of shipping history is hard to capture in a single sentence — but it can be sailed. In 1926, the Schreiber-Reederei cast off in Bremen with a steamship and its first own timetable; today, as Hal över, we carry that story forward. To mark the anniversary, we invite you on a series of special trips that revisit historic routes: from an evening moonlight cruise to a day trip to Bremerhaven. Unique dates, little journeys through time, open seating on board – and every voyage tells a chapter from 100 years on the Weser.

1926

In 1926, the Schreiber-Reederei announced its first regular timetable for scheduled passenger service to the north of Bremen. To mark this venture, a moonlight cruise to Blumenthal was organised 100 years ago aboard the steamship "Libelle", followed by a ball ashore. The motor vessel "Stadt Bremen" entered service in 1929.

1930s

The steamships "Franzius" and "Friedrich" join the fleet. At the Atlas shipyards in Bremen, the saloon vessels "Hanseat", "Weserstolz", "Deutschland" and "Oceana" are launched and put into service. The steamship "Libelle", which started it all, is sold. After five years on the Weser, the steamship "Franzius" is sold to Berlin.

1940s

From 1939 onwards, no further trips were offered by official order. Some of the ships were requisitioned and used by the German navy. In 1946, service to Bremerhaven resumed. In 1949, a landing stage at the Schlachte was reinstated and harbour cruises began again.

1950s

In addition to the boat trips, a coach service is launched. The motor vessel "Wesertal" enters service.

1960s

By the early 1960s, the Schreiber-Reederei is the only passenger shipping company on the Lower Weser. Founder Otto W. A. Schreiber dies in 1967. 1969 marks the final season offering trips from Bremerhaven to Bremen in the morning and back to Bremerhaven in the afternoon.

1970s

The vessels "Heimat" and "Stadt Bremen" are sold. In 1976, the company celebrates its 50th anniversary.

1980s

The vessels "Weserstolz", "Wesertal" and "Nordland" are sold. The MS "Friedrich" is handed over to an association for restoration and preservation. In 1988, the new passenger vessel "Hanseat" enters service. In 1984, the association for the preservation of the Sielwall ferry is founded — the predecessor of today's Hal över.

1990s

The vessel "Deutschland" is sold. A new landing stage at the Seebäderkaje becomes available in Bremerhaven. In 1994, Hal över is founded as a limited company (GmbH).

2000s

In 2002, Hal över acquires the Schreiber-Reederei, whose name is preserved within the new company name. The passenger vessel "Schiff No. 2" and the ferries "Ostertor" and "Punke" join the fleet.

2010s

The vessel "Pusdorp" is purchased and trips to Worpswede begin with the vessel "Alma". A replica of the historic Weser cargo barge "Lüder von Bentheim" is operated for several years. The passenger vessel "Schloss Munzingen" is acquired in southern Germany and enters service on the Weser as the "Gräfin Emma". The paddle steamer "Wappen von Minden" is operated for several years in Bremen as the "Weserstolz".

2020s

The company weathers the coronavirus crisis and successfully continues operations. In 2026, the 100th anniversary of the Schreiber-Reederei will be celebrated.
